Do you ever wonder what's in season?

An excerpt from a Spark People article: You’ll get the most nutrition—not to mention the most affordable enjoyment—by eating seasonally. Although the exact season for specific items varies from region to region (you’ll almost certainly get that big beefsteak tomato much earlier in Georgia than in Ohio), follow these basic guidelines for optimal nutrition and taste:

* In spring, pick the new growth of the season: tender leafy vegetables such as spinach, Romaine or leaf lettuces, Swiss chard, and early peas, as well as fresh herbs such as basil, parsley, and dill.
* For summer, try lighter produce, with fruits such as strawberries, pears, apples, and plums, and vegetables such as summer squash, broccoli, corn, and cauliflower. You can also incorporate other summer-type herbs, such as mint or cilantro.
* During fall, choose hearty harvest foods, including sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, and garlic. When cooking, emphasize “warmer” spices and seasonings such as peppercorns, ginger, and mustard seeds.
* In winter, also pick hearty foods. Keep in mind the principle that foods which take longer to grow are generally more sustaining than foods that grow quickly. In this category are most root vegetables, including carrots, potatoes, onions and garlic, as well as eggs, corn, and nuts.

  1. It's all about the next bite. I have fallen fate to the negative talking myself. I have 2 days to life time and I am freaking out. I am going to track every bite for the next 2 days and praying I stay in my range! Made soup tonight but didn't eat until 8:00 tonight. Why don't we think we are worth it! It's so easy when we have worth and trust the program! Then we have to ruin it and eat crap and feel like crap!

  2. Well I haven't eaten yet this morning! I am afraid it will be like yesterday
hunting for anything that's way off program. Maybe oatmeal would be good or muffin and an egg. Does this ever get easier!

  3. Thanks for the comments Kim. It's nice to know someone's out there! I decided that I am going to stop weighing myself at home and I'm going to "try" to stop expecting weight loss when I'm not doing everything I know to do. Activity to name 1! Good luck today. What an achievement to reach lifetime! GOOD FOR YOU!

  4. I need to be celebrating instead of throwing a pity party! When I concentrate on trying to lose weight I always gain. If I concentrate on how I feel and stop the negative talk to myself I lose. Let trust the program and have a great day! Hope to see you Thursday.

  5. Well ladies I had a wake up call yesterday! I spent the day at the hospital with my Mother, she had a stroke. I learned the risk of having a stroke. My Mother is my height and weighs 10 pounds more than I did before I started WW. She also has type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and she's over 55. These are all risks factors. Just by working the program and losing 32 pounds I have reduced all these risk. So when we think this is so hard and we are not worth it think of not being able to make something to eat or workout or not being able to do any of the things that we love to do like hugging are kids or grandkids. Doing the program and getting healthy is so much easier and so worth it!

  7. The program is worth it, and everyday is different. I do better if I am planning my day,and I have to journal..Then Treadmill at least 5 times a week....Its like a slow boat to China, and because I gained back so much, it makes me so mad at myself....how did I let myself just throw that damn caution to the wind?

  8. Kim, I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. I hope she makes it through ok.

You are absolutely right though about concentrating on losing weight makes you gain. Positive thinking and making life more than just a weightloss struggle is so important. Focusing everyday and what you eat not only gets boring but takes you away from having fun in life! I'll try and make it thursday. I'll have my nephew.

  9. You girls bring a smile to my face with your comments. I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling too but it does help me not feel so bad. This is no time to give up because that will get us exactly where we don't want to be and fast!
